What is a MAF Sensor?

A MAF sensor is a component used in internal combustion engines to measure the amount of air entering the engine in order to adjust the amount of fuel injected.

Using the information obtained and sent to the engine control unit (ECU), it is possible to calculate the amount of fuel that needs to be injected into the cylinders.

How does a MAF Sensor work?

Mass airflow sensors contain a small wire that is electrically heated (hot filament) and a temperature sensor to measure air temperature.

When you accelerate, the air around the hot filament increases, cooling it.

The higher the airflow, the greater the electric current required to keep it warm.

What types of MAF Sensor Are There?

There are currently two types of mass airflow sensors:

 

  • Digital MAF Sensors

Digital MAF sensors are powered by the Electronic Control Unit (ECU), requiring a voltage of 5V;

 

  • Analogue MAF Sensors

Analogue MAF sensors contain a tube that deviates to two sensors: one which is at room temperature and the other which is heated to 200° at the point at which it enters the engine. The airflow cools the hot film, causing a variation in the electrical resistance and voltage sent to the ECU.

Mass airflow sensor compatibility depends on several factors, such as engine type, engine control system, as well as vehicle model, brand, and manufacturer.

Each manufacturer may use different engine management technologies, influencing MAF sensor specifications.

What Care and Maintenance Does a MAF Sensor Require?
